Ka Ora, Ka Ako provides more than a million free healthy lunches every week to ākonga | students in schools and kura around Aotearoa.
Why isn’t my child’s school in the programme?
We know there are other schools and kura that would benefit from free lunches. Funding is limited, so we aim to reach the top 25% of students in schools and kura that are in most need of support.
We use the Equity Index to work out which schools we need to include to reach these students. The Equity Index is a tool we use to work out which schools may need extra funding and resources.
The Equity Index is reviewed each year. Sometimes this means schools and kura that were not in the school lunches programme before will be invited to join.
Any schools and kura that were getting lunches that drop out of the 25% threshold will still be part of Ka Ora, Ka Ako.
At the moment Ka Ora, Ka Ako is funded until the end of 2026.
