About the scholarships

The Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships recognise Māori who are undertaking tertiary study and demonstrate characteristics that align with the values of the 28th (Māori) Battalion.

The 2024 tertiary scholarship recipients include 1 doctoral candidate, 4 master’s students, 4 undergraduate students and 2 vocational education and training students.

The winners of the prestigious Manakura Award will also be recognised at this year’s award ceremony. The Manakura Award is the highest accolade of the Ngarimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships and Awards. It is only presented every 3 years to exceptional individuals. This award was last presented to the late Tā Wira Gardiner in 2021.

The awards ceremony is an opportunity for whānau, hapū and iwi to celebrate the recipients’ success.

Ngarimu video competition

The winners of the 2023 Ngarimu video competition will also be recognised at this year’s award ceremony.

The video competition is open to Māori learners in Years 7 to 13. It enables them to showcase the rich contribution made by members of the 28th (Māori) Battalion they descend from or are connected to through their wider whānau, hapū and iwi.
