What Te Atakura time allowance covers

Te Atakura allowance is for teachers trained under the scheme up to 1992. It recognises that their main role is teaching te reo Māori.

These kaiako were trained to:

  • give guidance and support and be positive role models for Māori students
  • liaise between the school and the Māori community
  • help develop and implement taha Māori in school programmes
  • act as a resource person for the staff of the school.

The allowance is limited to contact time doing the duties outlined above and is recorded on the teacher's timetable.

The allowance ends when the teacher:

  • is no longer employed from teachers’ salaries
  • resigns
  • alters their employment designation
  • is granted leave without pay
  • goes on approved study leave.
