You can see your school's allocation for classroom release time (CRT) under 'additional staffing' in Pourato. Your CRT allocation is shown as a full-time teacher equivalent (FTTE).
Formulas for each school type#
We use different formulas depending on school type to calculate classroom release time.
The settlement of the primary teachers’ collective agreement (PTCA) 2023 – 2025 included an increase in CRT for primary, intermediate and specialist schools. The increase is being phased in over 3 stages ending in 2025.
Step 1: total FTTE
Add together the school's full-time teacher equivalent (FTTE) allocations for:
- Entitlement staffing, including curriculum time allowance, management time allowance, and (for special schools only) base guidance staffing.
- Learning support (Ongoing Resourcing Scheme (ORS) staffing, including learning support staffing allowance and Learning support management allowance).
- Staffing transfers (adding all staffing transferred to the school by other schools and subtracting all staffing transferred from the school to other schools).
- Supernumerary staffing (other than teachers exercising the retraining, long service leave and severance provisions).
- Senior teacher special duties normal schools' allowance.
Step 2: subtract for principal
Subtract 1 FTTE for the principal.
Step 3: rounding
If the subtotal from step 1 is a decimal ending in:
- .79 or less, round it down (so 5.79 FTTE would become 5)
- .80 or higher, leave it as it is and don't round down.
Step 4: multiply FTTE by CRT rate
Multiply the subtotal from step 3 by the current CRT rate to find the total allowance:
- From the beginning of Term 1, 2024, multiply the subtotal from step 5 by 0.06.
- From the beginning of Term 3, 2024, multiply the subtotal from step 3 by 0.08.
- From the beginning of Term 1, 2025, multiply the subtotal from step 3 by 0.10.
Teachers employed at restricted composite schools are covered by the primary teachers' collective agreement (PCTA). The settlement of the primary teachers’ collective agreement (PTCA) 2023 – 2025 included an increase in CRT. The CRT increase is being phased in over 3 stages ending in 2025.
Step 1: total Year 1-8 FTTE
Add the following:
- The school’s primary curriculum staffing (in FTTEs), rounded up to 1 decimal place.
- The school’s Year 1-8 roll divided by its total roll, and the result multiplied by management base staffing (in FTTEs) and rounded down to 1 decimal place.
- The school’s total Year 1-8 weighted roll divided by its total weighted roll, and the result multiplied by management staffing (in FTTEs) rounded down to 1 decimal place.
Step 2: rounding
If the subtotal from step 1 is a decimal ending in:
- .79 or less, round it down (so 5.79 FTTE would become 5)
- .80 or higher, leave it as it is and don't round down.
Step 3: multiply FTTE by CRT rate
Multiply the subtotal from step 3 by the current CRT rate to find the total:
- From the beginning of Term 1, 2024, multiply the subtotal from step 5 by 0.06.
- From the beginning of Term 3, 2024, multiply the subtotal from step 2 by 0.08.
- From the beginning of Term 1, 2025, multiply the subtotal from step 2 by 0.10.
The settlement of the Area School Teachers’ Collective Agreement (ASTCA) 2023-2025 included an increase in CRT for teachers predominantly teaching Year 1-6 classes. The CRT increase is being phased in over 3 stages ending in 2025.
Step 1: Year 1-8 eligible FTTE
Add up the school's:
- primary curriculum staffing (in FTTEs), rounded up to 1 decimal place
- Year 1-8 roll divided by its total roll, and the result multiplied by management base staffing (in FTTEs) and rounded down to 1 decimal place
- total Year 1-8 weighted roll divided by its total weighted roll, and the result multiplied by management staffing (in FTTEs) rounded down to 1 decimal place.
Step 2: rounding
If the subtotal from step 1 is a decimal ending in:
- .79 or less, round it down (so 5.79 FTTE would become 5)
- .80 or higher, leave it as it is and don't round down.
Step 3: multiply FTTE by CRT rate
Multiply the subtotal from step 2 by 0.04. Save this result.
Step 4: Year 1-6 eligible FTTE
Add up the school's:
- Year 1-6 curriculum staffing (in FTTEs), rounded up to 1 decimal place
- Year 1-6 roll divided by its total roll, and the result multiplied by management base staffing (in FTTEs) and rounded down to 1 decimal place
- total Year 1-6 weighted roll divided by its total weighted roll, and the result multiplied by management staffing (in FTTEs) rounded down to 1 decimal place.
Step 5: rounding
Round down the outcome of step 4 to a whole number.
Step 6: multiply FTTE by CRT rate
Multiply the subtotal from step 5 by the current CRT rate to find the total:
- From the beginning of Term 1, 2024, multiply the subtotal from step 5 by 0.02.
- From the beginning of Term 3, 2024, multiply the subtotal from step 5 by 0.04.
- From the beginning of Term 1, 2025, multiply the subtotal from step 5 by 0.06.
Step 7: total
Add the results from step 3 and step 6 together.
Step 1: total eligible FTTE
Add the following:
- The school’s primary curriculum staffing (in FTTEs), rounded up to 1 decimal place.
- The school’s Year 1-8 roll is divided by its total roll, and the result multiplied by management base staffing (in FTTEs) and rounded down to 1 decimal place.
Multiply the subtotal from step 2 by 0.04.
