The Ngarimu video competition and the new Ngarimu waiata composition competition are open now
The 2024 Ngarimu video competition and the new Ngarimu waiata composition competition are now open for submissions.
These competitions were developed in memory of Victoria Cross winner Second Lieutenant Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and the 28th (Māori) Battalion. The purpose of the competitions is to encouraging the learning of te reo Māori and of Māori history, tradition and culture as it relates to the Māori Battalion.
The competitions are open to ākonga Māori in Years 7 to 13, and entries can be submitted by an individual, a team or a kura.
Topic ideas for videos and/or waiata submissions:
- choose a tupuna or member of the 28th (Māori) Battalion from your rohe and tell us what makes that person special to your community
- choose a 28th (Māori) Battalion event. What made it special to your rohe?
- explore and analyse the contribution of Māori to the war effort in World War I or II from a contemporary view
- the important role of 28th Māori Battalion wahine | pouaru at home.

2024 Ngarimu video competition
This competition provides ākonga Māori with an opportunity to practise storytelling and research, and to learn about the 28th (Māori) Battalion history.
Ākonga submit a 3 to 5 minute video in English or te reo Māori. They will be in to win 1 of 6 prizes for themselves and their school or kura.

New Ngarimu waiata composition competition
Waiata, mōteatea, haka and poi have always been an intrinsic part of how Māori tell stories, share information and remember loved ones.
The waiata composition competition encourages Māori learners to explore their creativity, and increase their understanding of the immense contributions made by the 28th (Māori) Battalion during World War II.
Ākonga submit a waiata in English or te reo Māori. They will be in to win 1 of 6 prizes for themselves and their school or kura.
