What the reports are

The Early Literacy Approach Evaluation: A snapshot

'The Early Literacy Approach Evaluation: A snapshot' covers the early implementation period (2021-2022) of 3 literacy initiatives known collectively as the 'early literacy approach'.

These initiatives include:

  • Better Start Literacy Approach professional support.
  • Reading Recovery and Early Literacy support.
  • Ready to Read Phonics Plus books (R2RPP).

The Literacy and Communication Package Trial Final Evaluation Report

'The Literacy and Communication Package Trial Final Evaluation Report' evaluated 3 accelerative structured approaches to literacy initiatives for learners in Years 3 to 8.

The trials took place during Term 2, 3 and 4 of the 2022 school year.

Six insights from the evaluations

In the accompanying Ministry of Education commentary, 'Six Insights from the Early Literacy Approach and Literacy and Communication Trial Evaluations', we bring together key insights from the 2 evaluation reports.

We also provide updated information since the evaluations ended in 2022.

What the reports show

The literacy initiatives evaluated showed evidence of:

  • improvements in students’ literacy skills
  • increases in the number of teachers using structured approaches to literacy
  • improvements in teachers’ confidence and capability.

What we are doing with the findings

We are using the findings of these evaluations as we design and implement literacy supports in line with directions being set by the Minister of Education.
