About the teacher-only days

These teacher-only days provide schools and kura with dedicated time to understand, prepare and engage with changes across The New Zealand Curriculum refresh, the redesign of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, and shifts to strengthen NCEA.

They are opportunities for kaiako to share ideas and expertise and to grow their confidence in implementing the upcoming curriculum and assessment changes.

Four teacher-only days are available for primary and secondary schools and kura, with 2 days in 2023 and 2 days in 2024.

Our national and regional teams work together to support schools and kura to plan an effective teacher-only day.

Resources and support is available from Te Mahau website.

Dates

The Sector Advisory Group will advise on the planning for each teacher-only day.

Key considerations are:

  • minimising clashes for schools and kura
  • selecting dates to avoid regional or cultural events, interschool fixtures, and key NCEA assessment dates where possible.

When planning these dates, we recommend that places of learning coordinate a common day with other schools and kura in the area. This will provide kaiako and leaders with more opportunities for collaboration and minimise disruption to whānau.

Schools and kura participating in curriculum and assessment teacher-only days within the set timeframes do not need to make up any half days. The number of half days required to be open for instruction will be reduced.

The focus of each day

Schools and kura can tailor teacher-only days to meet their needs by focusing on whichever curriculum and assessment changes they choose.

We recognise each place of learning will be at a different stage in their change journey, so we’re encouraging selection of a focus that matters most to them, their kaiako, ākonga, whānau and hapori.
