In 2008 the then Minister of Education agreed to the Ministry undertaking consultation with the Murupara community and stakeholders about the future of education in this town.

About the consultation

This area has experienced population decline, and at the time that consultation was initiated there were also concerns about:

  • student achievement
  • poor attendance at the secondary level, and
  • a large number of students leaving Murupara to attend school elsewhere.

Through this consultation the community developed an education strategy for Murupara. The Minister agreed to support the strategy through:

  • the closure of Murupara Primary School and Rangitahi College, which took place at the end of 2012, and
  • the establishment of Murupara Area School, which opened at the start of 2013.
