What the property maintenance grant is for
Schools and kura receive a property maintenance grant (PMG) to pay for building and facility maintenance. This funding is generally for work that is cyclical or unforeseen.
The grant can be used for general maintenance like painting and ground maintenance. It should not be used for caretaker wages.
Who the PMG is for
All schools and kura with property owned by us will receive property maintenance funding for that property.
Property that is privately owned, owned by a community group or paid for by the school board is not funded by the grant.
Property ownership is recorded in the K2 system.
How we work out the property maintenance grant amount
We calculate your PMG based on:
- gross area (which is the external footprint of a building we own or the integrated area)
- square metres of painted exterior walls
- cubic capacity of swimming pools we own or that are integrated
- the 'corrosion factor' for schools in areas where buildings are subject to very high corrosion from extreme weather and salt spray (we provide a top-up for these schools to carry out the more frequent maintenance needed)
- the 'isolation factor', which is linked to the isolation index used in operational funding (it is an adjustment for schools in isolated areas that have extra costs due to their remoteness).
We calculate funding for your land up to a maximum size for:
- primary school – 2.5 hectares
- intermediate school – 4 hectares
- secondary school – 8 hectares
- composite school – 6 hectares.
The funding your school gets is not affected by the size of the school roll.

How the funding is paid to schools
Payments are made quarterly through the usual operational grant payment processes.
