Consultation starts on minimising food related choking risks in early learning services

The Ministry of Education is proposing to amend the licensing and certification criteria to minimise the risk of young children choking on food, by requiring early learning services to follow Ministry of Health guidance in the preparation and serving of food.

We expect most services already follow guidelines for minimising food-related choking risks. However, some may need to make changes to the way they do things to meet new minimum standards.

The Ministry would like to hear views from educators, parents, caregivers and whānau on the proposed changes.
