Digital technologies for teaching and learning
Digital technologies are everywhere and they’re bringing many exciting opportunities for our schools, impacting what, where and how education is delivered. For this reason, supporting schools to make the most of new technologies is a significant part of the Ministry’s work programme.
By the end of 2016, all schools will have access to the technology available to provide high quality, high capacity, ultrafast internet access for teaching and learning. Connected classrooms offer today’s students and teachers easier, affordable, and faster access to information, teaching and learning resources, peers, experts and the wider community.
Connecting with technology
- Schools are using digital devices like laptops and tablets to quickly, easily and cheaply connect students with a huge and ever-growing number of educational tools and resources and subject-matter experts over the internet.
- Teachers are using online networks and social media to connect with other schools and peers who can help them adapt their teaching practices to make the most of digital tools.
- Students are using digital technologies to connect with other students across the country and across the world, and to engage in self-directed learning in areas of personal interest and expertise.
- Parents, families and whānau are forming stronger connections with schools using digital services like social networks, websites and online surveys.
- Many of us use technology to connect to information and learning whenever and wherever we choose.
Supporting schools to succeed
We are working with schools and their communities to ensure they have access to modern technology and that teachers and principals can use their high quality internet connections to ensure better learning outcomes. We are:
- ensuring schools have high-quality ICT infrastructure through the School Network Upgrade Project (SNUP)
- providing teachers and principals with leased laptops through the TELA scheme
- providing funding for software
- providing professional development (external link) and information for schools (see www.elearning.tki.org.nz (external link) and www.netsafe.org.nz (external link) )
- helping teachers to connect and network with each other online with the Virtual Learning Network (external link)
- developing digital resources for schools such as e-books (external link)
- assisting schools to become digital hubs for their communities
- providing on-going support to schools free of charge through the Connected Learning Advisory service (external link)
- working with Network for Learning (N4L) (external link) as they rollout the government-funded Managed Network internet service to schools and provide Pond (external link) as a digital hub for teachers seeking educational resources
- providing schools with online tools that support teaching and learning such as the PaCT (external link) , and
- and tools that assist with student assessment such as e-asTTle (external link)
The digital environment is transforming teaching and learning in our schools. We are committed to taking full advantage of this opportunity to help our schools become world leaders in digital education systems through changes to their infrastructure, practices and pedagogy.

The Ministry’s illustrative draft vision for education in 2025 Lifelong Learners in a Connected World [PDF, 6 MB] shows a highly connected, interdependent education system that equips students with the skills for the future, fosters students’ identity, language and culture, and prepares students to participate as successful citizens in the 21st century.
We are also referring to the Future-focused Learning in Connected Communities [PDF, 917 KB] report which was published by Associate Minister Kaye’s 21st Century Learning Reference Group in May 2014 to provide guidance on our strategy and priorities.
