Who can apply for a reimbursement
Reading recovery teachers who travel between schools to teach Reading and Recovery and Early Literacy Support programmes can apply to have their travel costs reimbursed.
They will be employed part-time or full-time at 1 school, which is called their base school. The teacher also travels to other schools to teach reading recovery for ākonga | students from Year 0 to 8.
The schools they travel to must be in a reading recovery cluster or network approved by us. They must be overseen by a reading recovery tutor.

Travel between home and school
A travel reimbursement does not usually cover travel between the teacher's home and a school.
We may approve a travel reimbursement if the teacher had to begin or end the day in a school that is not their base school. We may also consider the distance the teacher had to travel.
The school that employs the teacher must get approval from their regional office first.
How teachers claim travel costs from schools
The teacher should keep a log of daily travel throughout each term.
At the end of the term, they fill in the reading recovery travel expenses form.

To apply for travel expense reimbursement, follow this process:
The teacher gives their completed form and a copy of their daily travel log to the reading recovery tutor for checking and initialling.
The tutor confirms the claim as correct and sends to the principal of the base school for approval and payment.
The base school pays the teacher’s travel expenses from their operational funding.
The teacher signs the receipt part of the claim form to acknowledge payment.
How schools claim travel costs from us
The principal of the base school submits a claim for the reimbursement of the travel payment to us.
They send the travel expenses form filled in by the teacher to our resourcing division. We will then reimburse the base school.
