What the Export Education Levy is for

The Export Education Levy (EEL) is used for export education promotion marketing and quality assurance.

The levy is also used to fund administration of the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice, and the International Student Contract Dispute Resolution Scheme (DRS).

Paying the EEL is a requirement under the Education (Export Education Levy) Regulations 2022.

International student information in ENROL

Your school or kura is responsible for making sure the ENROL register is accurate with fee-paying international students by the levy calculation deadline. This is because the EEL uses the database to calculate your allocation.

The student name, student number, start date, end date and weekly fee details from ENROL are updated daily in Pourato.

How the levy is calculated

The EEL is calculated as part of your school's quarterly operational funding. It is a variable levy based on the tuition fees paid by international students.

The variable levy is 0.0050 times the total tuition fees collected by your school for international students.

When the levy is debited

The EEL is debited (recovered) from your quarterly operational funding instalment and published in Pourato.

The levy is debited 3 times per year:

  • Trimester 1 (1 February to 30 April) funding is debited in July.
  • Trimester 2 (1 May to 31 July) is debited in October.
  • Trimester 3 (1 August to the end of the school year) is debited in April the following year.

A tax invoice with the EEL payment can be printed from Pourato. It will be for a trimester levy and include GST.
