You need to follow this process to apply if your school did not receive funding in the previous funding round.

If your school is currently receiving ESOL funding, you need to update your status list to receive funding in the next funding round.

ESOL funding for schools that received funding in previous round

Complete a record of progress

Before you apply, fill in the English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP) record of progress or ELLP Pathway record of progress for every student.

If you are not familiar with the English Language Learning Progressions, contact our team for support.

Assess your student's eligibility

Use the table on the ELLP record of progress form to find out if your student's score shows they are eligible for ESOL funding.

Keep proof of migrant or refugee background

Your school needs to keep a record of the student's migrant or refugee background. It does not need to be sent to us.

Migrant students

Keep proof of the date the student entered New Zealand.

New Zealand-born students

Keep proof that at least 1 parent of the student is an immigrant or former refugee.

Former refugee students

Keep proof of the student's refugee status:

  • Quota refugees – keep a copy of the Certificate of Identity.
  • Family reunification refugees – keep a copy of their letter/email from Immigration New Zealand.
  • Asylum seeker refugees – keep a copy of their letter/email from Immigration New Zealand.
