What antivirus software is and why it’s important

Antivirus can detect and block malicious software (malware) such as:

  • ransomware that encrypts the files on your device and requires you to pay the hacker a ransom to decrypt them
  • viruses that can help create a back door for a hacker to get access to your device and the information stored on it.

Our recommendation

We recommend that you install antivirus on all school devices and require that it’s installed on any device that connects to the school network. This includes bring your own devices (BYOD).

You should also install antivirus software on devices that come with in-built antivirus or other security features. This includes MacBooks and Chromebooks.

Choosing antivirus software

You should choose an antivirus that:

  • has a high malware detection rating
  • can provide add-ons such as blocking objectionable material, backup storage or password managers
  • can schedule automatic scans.

AVTest and Netsafe have antivirus reviews and tests done by independent organisations to help you choose.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint for staff devices

We fund Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. State and state-integrated schools can use this for school-owned staff devices, including MacBooks.

Windows Defender

Some devices will not qualify for antivirus software funded by us, but they still need protection.

Windows computers have Windows Defender preinstalled by default. Windows Defender automatically scans your device for malware and will update when you normally update your device.

Windows Defender is not as secure as Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. We recommend you opt for Microsoft Defender for Endpoint if you’re eligible.

Remove Symantec antivirus protection

We no longer fund or provide updates for Symantec antivirus software. If your school has it, you will be at greater risk against malware.

We recommend you replace Symantec with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint as soon as possible.
