About national student numbers has more information about what NSNs are.
Accessing NSNs
NSNs are allocated and stored in the National Student Index (NSI).
Tertiary education providers can access the NSI system if they:
- receive funding for equivalent full-time students
- offer qualifications approved for student loans and/or allowances.
You can access the NSI through the web application or your NSI-integrated student management system (SMS). There are user guides available on the application website.
SMS vendors providing a service to tertiary organisations can find out how to integrate with NSI on the application website.

Assigning an NSN
You can assign NSNs for your students and update existing NSI records that your students may already have. Students who have been enrolled in the New Zealand education system before will have an NSN. Check to see if a student has a current NSN before creating a new one.
For students who do not have an NSN, you can create an NSN for them. Sight and verify the student's official documentation before creating the NSN. We may request a copy of official documentation used to verify an NSN for data quality purposes.
