A Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako is a group of education and training providers, that form around their students’ education pathway, working together to help students achieve their full potential.

Benefits of joining

Joining a Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako is voluntary. Early learning services are encouraged to join to support tackling the achievement challenges of the Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako in their area, because:

  • Children and young people benefit when educators across their learning pathways work together to share expertise and increase their teaching capability.
  • Communities of Learning | Kāhui Ako are an opportunity for early learning services and schools to work collaboratively to improve education outcomes for all learners.
  • Including early learning expertise in a Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako can help make transition to school as seamless as possible.
  • Strong early learning foundations support the whole learning pathway.

Joining a Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako

  • The geographical location of an early learning service and the education pathway most children in the service follow will guide discussions with Ministry staff as to which Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako is the best fit.
  • Because there are more early learning services than schools and kura, services may choose to be represented in a Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako by an agreed nominee. Representation may depend on the number of local early learning services, and discussions with local Ministry staff and the Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako.
  • Early learning services may discuss with local Ministry staff and the Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako whether to join an established Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako and sign up to their Memorandum of Agreement or to contribute informally.
  • Local Ministry staff can support you to start discussions with other early learning services or schools and kura about becoming involved in a local Community of Learning | Kāhui Ako.
