Information for sponsors and schools wanting to convert
Pathways to becoming a charter school
There are 2 pathways to becoming a charter school. Either:
- a potential sponsor applies to open a new charter school or
- a community or board of an existing state school, together with a potential sponsor, applies to convert to a charter school.
There will be a 2-stage formal application process in 2024. If you would like to be kept up to date on the process, email charter.schools@education.govt.nz.
A sponsors manual will be available in time to inform applications.
