Children needing to attend school or early learning can under Alert Level 3

New Zealand remains at Alert Level 4 which means that distance learning will continue until further notice.  A decision will be made on Monday 20 April about whether or not, and when, New Zealand will move to Alert level 3.

The Government and the Ministry of Education are very clear about what Alert Level 3 means for early learning and schooling services, for parents, and for children and young people.

Under Alert Level 3, early childhood and schooling services will be physically open for up to Year 10.  At Alert Level 3 parents and caregivers should, where they can, keep their children at home. But parents who need to send their children to school can do so.

Education for students in Years 11-13 will continue remotely, while tertiary education will be mostly through distance learning.

The Government and the Ministry believe that parents and caregivers best understand their own unique situation and needs.  Parents and caregivers, like all New Zealanders, know we are in extraordinary times and they will play their part to help keep their children at home, but it is important that schools and early learning centres are physically open for those parents who need them.

We also working with the sector to develop systems so that parents can advise their school or early learning services of their child’s return. This is so their health and wellbeing, and that of school staff, can be managed in accordance with public health principles

Our top priorities are the health and safety of our educators and students and ensuring all our learners are receiving an education. In any move to Level 3 these priorities will remain.

The education sector has been doing a great job responding to the needs of their learners during Alert Level 4. The Ministry of Education wants to work with the sector to do the same at Level 3

We are working very closely with the education sector on the details around the re-opening of schools, early learning services and tertiary institutions for if/when New Zealand moves to Level 3. Their knowledge and insights will inform more detailed and practical information.

We thank our educators, our parents and our learners for their efforts and patience at this time.
