Modernisation of the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Act 1945
The new legislation revises the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship Fund Act 1945 (the Ngārimu Act) to:
- amend the number of Ngārimu Board appointments and the appointments process;
- update criteria for Ngārimu scholarships and awards to reflect the current state of Māori education;
- align the Ngārimu Board’s practices and procedures with modern standards and practices to enable them to operate more flexibly and efficiently;
- replace outdated terminology.
The Ngārimu Act has only had minor changes since enactment (1945) and many of the sections have become out of date.
Impact of the legislation
The new legislation will modernise the Ngārimu Act to align it with the current state of Māori education.
Why the change?
The changes modernise the Ngārimu Act. Currently, the Ngārimu Act doesn’t fully reflect the current state of Māori education and the need to promote Māori educational achievement. The Board’s membership and appointment process don’t provide for the best appropriate mix of skills, values and perspectives.
As the Act has only had minor changes since enactment (1945) many of the sections have become out of date or are now no longer relevant to the current function of the Board, the education system, public sector and best practice.
Clearer guidelines and more efficient processes are expected to result in more funding available to support students.
