Crown entity and other statutory board appointments
We manage the process of appointments to a number of Crown entities, statutory boards and advisory groups on behalf of the responsible Ministers. These are important governance roles where members can make a real difference to education in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Current board appointments
Expressions of interest for appointment to Education Sector boards in 2024
The Minister of Education, and the Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, will be making appointments to the following boards in 2024:
- Tertiary Education Commission (TEC),
- New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA),
- Education New Zealand (ENZ),
- Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura), and
- New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO).
We are seeking expressions of interest in these appointments. The appointments are expected to be for 3-year terms, with a possibility for reappointment.
We are looking for the following experience and skills across each of these boards: governance and leadership experience, knowledge about the education system, finance and risk expertise, and other relevant skills and experience that contribute to well-functioning boards.
We may request that the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service conduct national security screening of candidates as part of the appointment processes.

Expressions of interest for board members and the Chair
TEC leads the Government’s relationship with the tertiary education sector and provides career services from education through to employment. TEC invests over $3 billion annually in tertiary education and supporting the tertiary and careers systems. It ensures New Zealanders are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for lifelong success.
- The Chair has an expected 50 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board business. The fee is $47,628 per annum.
- Board members have an expected 30 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board business. The fee is $23,520 per annum.

Expressions of interest for board member roles and the Chair
NZQA manages the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework, runs the assessment system for secondary schools, independently checks the quality of tertiary education providers (except universities), administers the Code of Pastoral Care, recognises overseas qualifications and manages standard-setting for some unit standards and qualifications.
- The Chair has an expected 30 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board business. The fee is $43,200 per annum.
- Board members have an expected 30 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board business. The fee is $21,600 per annum.
Education New Zealand | Manapou ki te Ao
Expressions of interest for board member roles
ENZ is New Zealand’s government agency for promoting and marketing New Zealand education internationally. It also supports the delivery of education services offshore, and administers scholarships to support New Zealanders studying overseas, particularly in Asia and Latin America.
- Board members have an expected 30 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board business. The fee is $16,800 per annum.
Te Aho o te Kura Pounamu

Te Kura is New Zealand’s state distance education provider, previously known as The Correspondence School. Te Kura offers a wide range of programmes from early childhood through to NCEA Level 3. It plays a role in the education of at-risk and disengaged learners.
- Board members have an expected 30 days’ commitment for meeting attendance and other board business. The fee is $15,582 per annum.

Ministerial advisory groups
We also assist with appointments to a number of Ministerial advisory groups.
Statutory appointments are made by the responsible Minister, or the Governor-General on the recommendation of the responsible Minister. The Minister must present candidates to the Cabinet Appointment and Honours Committee.
If you've been nominated for a position, the outcome of the process can't be confirmed until after appointments have been considered by the Cabinet Appointment and Honours Committee and Cabinet. This is likely to take up to 6 months from when your nomination was submitted.
Public servants aren't usually appointed to statutory boards.

Fees
Board members are paid fees according to the board's roles and responsibilities.
Education Crown board fees are set by Ministers using the Cabinet Fees Framework.
